England’s Commonwealth gold medallists and fourth seeds Chris and Gabby Adcock beat Malaysia’s Tan Aik Quan and Lai Pei Jing at the Li-Ning BWF World Championships in Copenhagen’s Ballerup Super Arena yesterday.

Winning 21-16 21-9, Gabby said afterwards, “We didn’t play the plan we wanted to and we were very disappointed that we let them get that far ahead early on, but we were confident we could catch it back if we played our style.

“We had a tough preparation for the Worlds, especially with the Commonwealth Games. We played a lot of games there. I think I played 17 matches in the two weeks.

“We won the Commonwealths and we are feeling good from that and the last two weeks’ preparations have gone really well.”

Today the pair face China’s 14th seeds Liu Cheng and Bao Yixin, the pair they beat to win the Hong Kong title in November.

Elsewhere, there was disappointment for England silver medallists Chris Langridge and Heather Olver who went down 21-15 21-14 to Singapore’s ninth seeds Danny Chrisnanta and Yu Yan Vanessa Neo on day two of the Championships.

And despite an earlier win, Gabby Adcock had also been hoping to make progress in the women’s doubles with Lauren Smith but the Commonwealth bronze medallists went down 21-9 21-19 against Malaysia’s Yin Loo Lim and Meng Yean Lee.
