Great Britain’s women matched their best-ever team result at the European Artistic Gymnastics Championships by claiming silver in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Hannah Whelan, Rebecca Downie, Claudia Fragapane, Rebecca Tunney and Ruby Harrold scored 170.633 points from 12 routines across four apparatus.

“We’ve worked so hard for this and deserve it 100%,” said Whelan afterwards, with Fragapane adding “I’m speechless, I’m so happy. I love this team and to do so well is amazing.”

Britain’s previous medal in the event came in 2010 when the squad – which included the now-retired Beth Tweddle – finished second in Birmingham. Downie, who competed at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is the only member of the 2010 line-up still in the GB team.

Congratulations girls!
