Tennis: Elena Baltacha breaks into top 50

September 15, 2010

British No.1, Elena Baltacha, has broken into the worl’d top 50 for the first time in her career.  The 27 year old is now ranked 49 and is the highest ranked Scottish woman since rankings began and only the second British woman to break the top 50 in the last 16 years.

Elena-BaltachaDespite exiting the US Open in the second round, Baltacha felt positive about her game and hoped she had done enough to improve her current rank of 57.

Anne Keothavong is the only other Brit in the last 16 years to break into the top 50, reaching a career high of 48 in February 2009.  Before this, Jo Drurie was the last British women to be ranking inside the top 50.

At the start of the year Baltacha’s goal was to stay in the top 100, so this recent promotion is a real delight for the Scot.  Battling injury and illness over the years has made the road to success more difficult but it’s smiles all around for the Scot now.

Talking about her promotion, Baltacha commented, “It’s unbelievable.  It really does feel so special.  I spent about 10 years trying to make the top 100 and didn’t get anywhere near it, so to do this at the age of 27 feels great”.

Baltacha admitted she had come close to quitting at time: “I’ve been through the possibility of retiring quite a few times and one time I really was about a week away from calling it a day.  Now when I think back to that and look at where I am now, it gives me goosebumps”.

The next goal is the top 40 and if she keeps working hard and remains focused, Baltacha really believes that could happen.
